Cancer Mortality Rates Are Higher In Men Than Women

In the Philippines, cancer is third out of the top 10 causes of death in 2009.  Leading causes of cancer-related deaths are lung cancer, breast cancer, cancer of the cervix, liver cancer, colon and rectum cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer, cancer of the oral cavity, cancer of the ovaries, and leukemia.

According to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, overall cancer mortality rates are higher for men than women in the United States.

Michael B. Cook, Ph.D., an investigator in the division of cancer epidemiology and genetics ath the National Cancer Institute, and colleagues used U.S. vital rates and survival data from the SEER database for 36 cancers by gender and age.  They assessed whether cancer mortality rates and cancer survival differed by gender.

"Men are more likely to die from cancer than women," said Cook.  "We found this to be true for a majority of specific types of cancer."

Results showed that the cancers that had the highest male-to-female mortality rate ratios were:  lip cancer (where 5.51 men died compared to 1 female); larynx (5.37-to-1); hypopharynx (4.47-to-1); esophagus (4.08-to-1); and urinary bladder (3.36-to-1).  Cancers with the highest mortality rates also showed greater risk of death in men than women:  lung and bronchus (2.31-to-1); colon and rectum (1.42-to-1); pancreas (1.37-to-1); leukemia (1.75-to-1); and liver and intrahepatic bile duct (2.23-to-1).

In their analysis of five-year cancer survival, the researchers adjusted for age, year of diagnosis and tumor stage and grade, when this information was available.  Cook and his team found that a person's gender did not play a major role in cancer survival.

For many cancers, men have poorer survival than women but the differences are slight.  It is difficult to assign any singular root cause, but influences include differences in behavior of the tumor, cancer screening among people without symptoms, presence of other illnesses and heath care seeking behaviors.

"Our research suggests that the main factor driving the greater frequency of cancer deaths in men is the greater frequency of cancer diagnosis, rather than poorer survival once the cancer occurs," said Cook.  "If we can identify the causes of these gender differences in cancer incidence then we can take preventive actions to reduce the cancer burden in both men and women."

The trend in past-due credit card receivables could mean that more credit cardholders are having difficulties making their payments on time. Accounts that were more than six months overdue came to PHP 6.858-billion. The rate of consumer credit defaults in the Philippines is almost triple the average in Asia.

The CIA Factbook estimates the population of the Philippines at 88.57 million as of August 2007.  If 3% of the household have credit card, then the number of credit card holders in the Philippines as of the same date is estimated at 2.66 million.  And the average credit card debt is PHP 43,647 per Filipino credit cardholder.

What’s Wrong with Credit Card Debt?
The Bible offers many warnings about debt, but it never says that borrowing money violates God’s commandments.  It may, however, be unwise to do so.

Carrying credit card debt violates two biblical principles.  First, debt presumes upon the future (James 4:13-15).  When we use credit card debt, we assume money will be available to pay off the debt in the future.

Second, using credit card debt may deny God an opportunity to provide.  Isaiah 55:8-9 says God’s ways are not our ways, that His plans are higher than ours.  We we use credit card debt as a quick solution, we effectively deny ourselves the opportunity to let God meet our needs.

Financial choices and predicaments are always symptomatic of other issues.  Some of the common issues that leads to credit card debt include a lack of contentment, a lack of self-discipline, the search for security, and the search for significance.

God wants us to be obedient to His commands, but He also wants us to be wise in how we live.  Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil” (NASB).

God's Perspective About Money

There is a great need in Christianity to get back to the basics of God's Word.  This is true whether we're talking about salvation, sanctification, service, or finances.

We have one purpose for anything we do in this lifetime - that is to glorify God.  If our day-to-day lives DON'T reflect that service, then WE'RE NOT SERVING GOD.

The financial principles given throughout God's Word are not there to see if we're strong enough to live by them; they're given because God knows that they are the BEST for us.  God's principles of finances are not an arbitrary set of rules by which to govern us; they are a loving Father's wisdom to those who will listen and trust Him.

Christ teaches about finances

It was surprising that Jesus talked so much about money.  16 out of His 38 parables were concerned on how to handle money and possessions.  And there are over 2,350 verses in the Bible about money and possessions as compared to verses about prayers that has only 500 and a fewer than 500 about faith.  The reason for this is simple - He chose a topic with which everyone could identify to use as an example.

Christ never said money or material things were problems.  He said that they are symptoms of the real problems.  He constantly warned us to guard our hearts against greed, covetousness, ego, and pride, because these are the tools that Satan uses to control and manipulate this world.

How we handle money affects our fellowship with the LORD

Luke 16:11 reads, "If therefore you have not been faithful in the use of worldly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?"  In this verse, Jesus equates how we handle money with the quality of our spiritual life.  We can translate this verse into this:

• Handle your money properly according to the principles of the Scripture, your fellowship with Christ will grow strong; or
• If you manage money unfaithfully, your fellowship with Him will suffer.

In short, following God's financial principles draws us closer to Christ.

Possessions competes with the LORD

Matthew 6:24 reads, "No one can serve two masters.  Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money."

Can you see the competition between the LORD and our earthly possessions?  See how Jesus describes it?  It's completely the opposite:  hate vs. love; devoted vs. despise!!!  This only shows that it is impossible for us to serve money even in a small way and still serve the LORD.

Anytime that our financial position is threatened, we get feisty!  It is because we know and understand that it takes money to run a family, it takes money to run a home, and it takes money for us to feel and look good.

Conclusion

Jesus talks about money so much because He wants us to know His perspective on this critical area of our life.

Common Cause of Diseases

With the aging population, the incidence of so-called age-related diseases should be expected to rise.  In fact the incidence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and a hosts of other diseases have been steadily rising for all age groups until it has reach epidemic proportions.  That is because the factors of stress, lack of physical activity, environmental pollutants and a diet high in acid-producing foods collectively create the underlying cause of most degenerative diseases.

Acid-Alkaline Imbalance

Understanding Our Body pH

pH (potential of hydrogen) is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.  It is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 - the lower the pH the more acidic the solution, the higher the pH the more alkaline the solution.  When a solution is neither acid nor alkaline, it has a pH of 7 which is neutral.

Water is the most abundant compound in the human body, comprising 70% of the body.  The body has an acid-alkaline ratio called the pH which is a balance between positively charged ions (acid-forming) and negatively charged ions (alkaline-forming).  Our body's pH level is slightly alkaline, with a normal range of 7.36 to 7.44.  The body continually strives to balance its pH.  When this balance is compromised many problems can occur.

It is important to understand that we are not talking about stomach acid or the pH of the stomach.  We are talking about the pH of the body's fluids and tissues which is an entirely different matter.

Most commonly, the salesperson are expected to sell products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing.  Some people equate MLM with direct selling, although MLM is only one type of direct selling.

The Direct Selling Association (DSA), an American industry body, reported that in 1990 twenty-five percent of members used MLM, growing to 77.3% in 1999.  Companies such as Avon, Electrolux, Tupperware, and Kirby all originally used single level marketing to sell their goods and later introduced multi-level compensation plans.  By 2009, 94.2% of members were using MLM, aacounting for 99.6% of sellers, and 97.1% of sales.  The DSA has approximately 200 members while it is estimated there are over 1,000 firms using multi-level marketing in the US alone.

History
It is generally accepted that the first multi-level marketing plan was introduced in 1945 by the California Vitamin Company (shortly afterwards to become Nutrilite).  The plan allowed Nutrilite distributors with at least 25 regular customers to recruit new distributors and draw a 3 percent commission from their sales.  Unlike traditional direct selling, this was an ongoing payment whenever the customer re-ordered, allowing direct sellers to build a sales organization that could generate a residual-like income.
